CONNECTA 2 completes the technical assistance for a Study on Tirana bypass, south section from Vaqarr to Farke

The Tirana bypass stretches for a length of 21 kilometers, from Kashar at the north, through Vaqarr in the south, up to Farkë to the east. It is one of the most important road initiatives in the country, as it aims to directly connect Durrës – Tirana and Tirana – Elbasan motorways while relieving the capital of transiting traffic.

Following the decision of the Albanian authorities to develop the Kashar – Vaqarr section as a standalone project, the existing documentation for the Tirana bypass needed to be adjusted to align with the scope of the Vaqarr – Farkë section in order to secure investment and facilitate procurement for the construction of the said southern part.

In response to the revised project definition, the CONNECTA 2 technical assistance focused on a comprehensive study on Tirana Bypass: South Section (Vaqarr – Farkë), resulting in:

    • Revised detailed design package for the IFI-financed segment;
    • Updated bill of quantities;
    • General technical report for the southern section including a cut-off point with the adjacent road section;
    • Clarified cost estimates in line with revised Albanian pricing systems;
    • Climate resilience study to comply with EBRD rules;
    • Revised tender documentation;
    • Assistance with preparation of an application for a WBIF investment grant.

The alignment of Tirana bypass southern section is planned as a dual carriageway facility with motorway characteristics and design speed varying from 100 to 120 km/h. Located in the center of crossroads of major regional and European corridors, once completed, the bypass will open up new opportunities for tourism, trade and sustainable growth. The bypass is also expected to bring environmental and urban benefits by significantly reducing noise/air pollution, traffic congestion and road accidents in the city of Tirana.
