The Niš – Brestovac railway section, located in southern Serbia (Niš – Preševo – Macedonian border part of the railway line) bears great importance for both domestic and international transport. The section lies on Rail Corridor X – a key pan-European arterial route which passes through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia and Greece leading also through Turkey to Asia.
The construction works on the Niš – Brestovac section which officially started in September, 2021 are ongoing. The project envisages complete overhaul and modernisation of the section. After the works are complete, the Niš – Brestovac single track railway line will be fully in compliance with the EU technical standards and will be suitable for train speeds of 120 km/h. The total value of the project is EUR 59.9 million, with 75% of the financing obtained under the EU grant (IPA 2015).
