CONNECTA completes the Technical Assistance to Construction Supervision on the Niš – Brestovac Railway Line

The Niš – Brestovac railway section, located in southern Serbia (Niš – Preševo – Macedonian border part of the railway line) bears great importance for both domestic and international transport.  The section lies on Rail Corridor X – a key pan-European arterial route which passes through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia and Greece leading also through Turkey to Asia.

The construction works on the Niš – Brestovac section which officially started in September, 2021 are ongoing. The project envisages complete overhaul and modernisation of the section. After the works are complete, the Niš – Brestovac single track railway line will be fully in compliance with the EU technical standards and will be suitable for train speeds of 120 km/h. The total value of the project is EUR 59.9 million, with 75% of the financing obtained under the EU grant (IPA 2015).

The modernisation and rehabilitation of the Niš – Brestovac railway section is a Design Build contract according to the FIDIC yellow book contract conditions. The technical assistance provided by CONNECTA started in July 2020 with the review of the construction contract documents and assisting the Serbian beneficiaries with preparatory administrative activities in accordance with FIDIC. The overall objective of the assignment was to see the initial design phase of the Design Build contract through to completion so that the project can proceed to the construction phase.

Following the beneficiaries’ request, CONNECTA’s technical assistance for the Niš – Brestovac Railway Line project was extended to construction supervision until the end of July 2022 in order to fulfill the role of the Engineer until the long term supervising team was in place.
